De Gea ready to leave Manchester United
Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has made it clear what it will take to keep him at the club. The 28-year-old Spanish international wants £350,000 a week to sign a new contract, or he will join French champions Paris Saint-Germain. The Sun says that Thomas Tuchel’s club will offer £60 million for him in the summer to make him the long-term replacement for Gianluigi Buffon.
Paper Round’s view: £60 million would be a healthy profit on the amount paid for De Gea when he joined from Atletico Madrid, but it would cost as least as much to replace him, and even then any replacement would be a step down in quality. United clearly have to pay the going rate for the best goalkeeper in the world, and they would be fools not to if they are planning on keeping Phil Jones and Chris Smalling at the club...
Spurs want £130m for Eriksen
Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has set his price for playmaker Christian Eriksen. The 27-year-old Danish international is out of contract at the end of next season, but that has not stopped the club from putting a £130 million price tag on Eriksen should Real Madrid want to bring him to Spain in the summer, according to the Mirror.
Paper Round’s view: Eriksen is one of the most reliable creative players in Europe, and if he had a few years to run on his deal then £130 million would be the going rate. But with just a year left, there is no sense in paying up for him when his signature could be secured for nothing - except a huge contract offer, of course - in a little over a year’s time.
Huddersfield could lose both manager and owner
After their defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon, Huddersfield Town’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed. Their owner, Dean Hoyle, is already considering a sale of the club despite the reduction in the value with the drop down the leagues, reports the Mail. Now manager Jan Siewert could be moving on, saying: "For me it's important to go through all the details — to make the club stronger is not just about going down directly or going up. You never know these things in football. You can't promise it.”
Paper Round’s view: Huddersfield’s financial value depends almost entirely on its presence in the Premier League. The parachute payments may give them a chance to come up again soon, but if the owner feels he needs out of the club then he may be tempted to cut any future investment and get out while he can. Losing a manager will only add to the problems.
Morelos to quit Rangers
Steven Gerrard will face a blow to his quest to leapfrog Celtic next season, with star striker Alfredo Morelos likely to leave in the summer. The 22-year-old Colombian international has 29 goals for Rangers already this season, but despite a contract signed in March the Express reports that he will soon leave the club, with the new deal a way to maximise his value.
Paper Round’s view: Rangers have a chance to topple Celtic after years off the pace, with Brendan Rodgers now at Leicester City and Neil Lennon yet to convince since his return. Selling a proven goalscorer like Morelos would only be an advantage if Rangers could sensibly use the majority of any funds raised by selling him, which can't be guaranteed.
