Chelsea line up Morata swap deal

Chelsea are preparing for changes for next season already, and have a swap deal in mind. They would send Alvaro Morata to Inter Milan, along with £35m, in return for Mauro Icardi. Both Icardi and Morata failed to make the World Cups of Argentina and Spain respectively. Morata strugged for form at Stamford Bridge after a bright start, whereas Icardi was unable to claim a place despite scoring 29 times in 34 appearances.
Paper Round's view: Morata's best seasons have come at Juventus in Italy, so he would likely be open to a move back to the country, even with a different side. He is clearly a quality player, though, so letting him leave after just one season does seem foolish. On the other hand, Icardi is perhaps even more talented than Morata, and has been in better form for longer. As part of a squad overhaul, he would surely please any incoming manager.

United consider Cancelo

Manchester United are looking at Valencia's Joao Cancelo to improve their defence. Cancelo spent the season on loan at Inter Milan, and they have the option to make the deal permanent. However, Inter haven't activated the clause and that could see United make a £30m offer in order to secure the Portuguese defender. Cedric Soares of Southampton is another option to support or replace Antonio Valencia on the right.
Paper Round's view: If United are willing to offer £30, and the clause that Inter Milan have is signifcantly lower than that figure, then inevitably Inter will either activate the deal and sell the player on themselves, or ask to be compensated as if that had been the case. Soares has done OK, and is already 26, but Cancelo is just 23 and may have more potential for long-term improvement than the Southampton defender.

Sandro could remain at Juventus

Manchester United could, though, miss out on Juventus left-back Alex Sando, as he will meet Juventus next week to discuss a new contract. His current deal runs until 2020 and could be extended further, with Juventus confident of extending his deal. United had planned to replace Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw with Sandro, with their two current full-backs having disappointed over the last couple of seasons.
Paper Round's view: Sandro would not be the first player to use interest from Manchester United to ensure that he is given a longer and better-paid contract. However, United are in need of a new left-back because both Shaw and Darmian have been seriously underwhelming for seasons. If not Sandro, then another player needs to be brought in, perhaps before the World Cup if possible, due to the abridged nature of the transfer window this summer.

Batshuayi future undecided

Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi is open to a stay at Borussia Dortmund, where he was on loan for the second half of the season. He is, however, willing to go back to Chelsea for next season. Borussia would be expected to offer around £50m to make the deal permanent, and Batshuayi said: "I don't have a preference; they're two beautiful clubs. My focus is on the World Cup right now and I don't want to think about what happens afterwards."
Paper Round's view: Batshuayi has rediscovered his scoring touch in Germany after an impressive time at Marseille. There seemed little doubt over his talent or attitude, but he does not seem suited to playing a smaller role at a bigger club. If Chelsea are to sign Icardi, then Chelsea's new manager, or Antonio Conte if he stays, will have to work out if they can include him in the first team often enough for him to make a difference.
