Arsene Wenger lines up £30 million Julian Draxler
Arsenal has long been linked with a move for German international Julian Draxler. He moved to Wolfsburg from Schalke, and had blossomed at his new club, but things have since deteriorated. He has been suspended by his current club, and told he will not play for them again - a January sale looks inevitable. According to the Express, Wenger will exploit the situation to make a January signing, which would be three big-money buys in a single season.
Paper Round's view: There is little doubting Draxler's talent. He has been linked with better teams than Arsenal, even, and most teams in the world would be happy to have him in their squad, if not their first team. Draxler would be an upgrade for Arsenal, a better player than the improving Alex Iwobi and Danny Welbeck. He would also give Arsenal a safety net in case one or both of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez choose not to renew their contracts. Given the suspension at Wolfsburg, it seems like this is a simple, obvious move for Wenger to make - which is why none of us should actually count on it happening.
Guardiola wants Rose at City
Pep Guardiola, the Sunday Star believes, wants Danny Rose to join Manchester City in the summer, with a fee of £25 million mentioned. Guardiola yesterday witnessed his side concede four goals to an out-of-form Leicester City side as they conceded three or more goals for the second Premier League match in a row. The defence of City is a problem, with most of the attention and money spent elsewhere, and John Stones yet to mature. Rose would play at left-back to replace Gael Clichy.
Paper Round's view: Danny Rose is a competent left-back, and one who has given Spurs plenty of hard work on the wing. He suits Guardiola's tactics in that he is physically fit, and can allow his side to press high up the pitch. In that sense, the transfer would make sense. In another sense, given Manchester City have the wealth of a nation behind them to buy whomever they want, it is hard to believe that Rose is the ideal candidate for any club that wants to win the Premier and Champions Leagues.
West Ham want Sturridge in January
The Sunday Times carries quotes from Slaven Bilic, indicating that he would make a move for Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge if the player became available. Sturridge is thought to be frustrated as he is unable to break into the first eleven at Liverpool, and West Ham need to improve their squad in order to fight their way out of a relegation battle. Bilic said, "Sturridge was one of the biggest talents; he’s a great player. The talent is there, the touch, the finishing, everything is great." With Andy Carroll often an injury worry, West Ham woud be mindful of another unreliable player.
Paper Round's view: Sturridge has been available for just half of the games played by Liverpool in his time there. He was, after Luis Suarez, the best player in the season that almost clinched them a title victory. But injuries appear to have further knocked his confidence, and there seems little point in making a permanent transfer for a player who might sit out the majority of games in future. West Ham are desperate enough to consider a loan signing, but that seems like it wouldn't benefit Liverpool unless they were able to bring in a suitable, long-term replacement.
Chelsea face abuse crisis
The number of former youth players who say they were abused by a scout at Chelsea has doubled in the last week, according to a story in the Mail on Sunday. Another three players have come forward this week, raising fears that there is a generation of players at Chelsea, and other clubs, who were targeted for abuse in the 1970s. A Chelsea spokesman said: 'We are fully committed to working with all the relevant authorities, including the FA, Premier League and police to fully understand what occurred an support all victims. We are absolutely determined to do the right thing, to fully support those affected and the investigations being carried out.'
Paper Round's view: Chelsea do, currently, appear to be handling the case cooperatively and transparently, and we can only hope that this is the reality. There will almost certainly be many more players and former players to come forward to give similar statements. Football has appeared to take the abuse seriously in a way that other organisations in recent scandals perhaps haven't. Let's hope that this continues for as long as is needed.
