Paper Round: United reignite interest in Toni Kroos, Arsenal's big summer midfield spend
United's interest in Kroos asks questions of Van Gaal, Arsenal's big midfield facelift and Boro join a six team race for a Belgian. It's Thursday's Paper Round.
United renew interest in Toni Kroos
Manchester United are back in the hunt for Toni Kroos according to the Mirror, two years after former boss David Moyes failed to capture his signature. The report says Van Gaal vetoed any move for Kroos in 2014 when he took over, which leaves questions whether the new chase for Kroos suggests the Dutchman might not be dictating transfer policy anymore.
Paper Round's view: Considering the heavy player turnover that's predicted for Real Madrid in the summer, Kroos could be one on the way out and you can't blame United for trying to take advantage of that situation. However, the story does correctly pose this question - has Van Gaal had a change of heart or is there being planning done at United that envisions him gone at season's end?
Arsenal's midfield overhaul with N'Golo Kante and Granit Xhaka top priorities
The Sun are reporting that N'Golo Kante and Granit Xhaka are Arsenal's top summer transfer priorities, as Wenger looks to overhaul the Gunners midfield according to the Sun. The story tips that long time squad players Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini are likely to leave the club in the summer, while they make hopefully a deal with Kante and Xhaka. It also mentions talks have gone on with Xhaka's club Borussia Monchengladbach, with the transfer figure estimated to be £27.5 million.
Paper Round's view: At least Wenger is finally conceding too many have failed to step up or improve when counted upon. Arteta and Flamini have their best football long behind them, and just can't be counted upon to start games if the first team choices are unfit or out of form.
Middlesborough join race for Gent striker Laurent Depoitre
The Daily Mail report that Middlesborough have joined Tottenham, Leicester, Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Brom in the battle for Gent striker Laurent Depoitre's signature. Depoitre has scored 14 goals for Gent this season and was called up to the Belgium squad for the first time. Depoitre has one year left on his contract and is believed to be worth in the vicinity of £12 million.
Paper Round's view: Has a largely unremarkable scoring record outside of this season in comparison to Premier League standards. A player that is hitting his straps late in his career, but will probably suit Tottenham and Leicester more, as he'll be more suited to the support striker in the squad rather than the main target man.
Everton eye Stoke's Mark Hughes
As Roberto Martinez's future at Everton looks all but over, the Mirror are reporting that Stoke's Mark Hughes is favourite for the vacant position on Merseyside. The story implies that Hughes is looked upon favourably by the people running Everton, despite Stoke keen to put up resistance to any move and keep the 52 year old as manager.
Paper Round's view: Hughes has learned a few things from his disastrous spells at Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers - namely the importance of signing players on output and not reputation or wage demands. Given Everton's new resources if Hughes were to get the job, spending the money more wisely has to be a key priority.
