FULL TIME – GERMANY WIN AND CLAIM OLYMPIC BRONZE
The final whistle goes and the German players converge on their goalkeeper, celebrating a moment that has just won them this game. It finishes 1-0 and the bronze medals belong to Germany – they’ve denied world champions Spain!
98’ – BERGER SAVES!
It’s an absolutely stunning save from Ann-Katrin Berger, who denies Putellas as she dives to her left, surely winning the match for Germany. Play continues but there are just seconds remaining…
97’ – PENALTY!
Oh my word, what drama! Right in the final seconds of this match and it’s a penalty for Spain! Lucia Garcia collapses to the turf in the box after a late challenge and the referee has no hesitation in pointing to the spot. The German players can’t believe it, but VAR upholds the decision and we have an extraordinary moment – Putellas vs Berger with what will surely be the last kick of standard time.
96’ – THE GOALSCORER GOES OFF
The goalscorer Gwinn makes way for the final moments, with Doorsoun coming on. Gwinn receives the congratulations of her manager for what could prove to be the match-winning moment.
94’ – CLAIMS FOR A PENALTY
Putellas claims that she’s pushed in the box by Popp, and she was, but it’s not enough for a penalty, certainly not.
93’ – WAS THAT THE CHANCE?
Germany give the ball away and it falls to Garcia right on the edge of the box. She has time as she shoots on the turn, but her effort is too close to the keeper.
90’ – ADDED TIME
Seven minutes will be added on at the end of this game. That’s more than enough time for Spain, and there’s a roar from the Spanish members of the crowd in Lyon. Will we see some late drama in this medal match?
89’ – BRILLIANT BLOCK
Bonmati darts down the outside and looks to shot, but Linder makes a superb block and Berger claims the resulting corner. Germany are minutes away from a huge result.
88’ – LACK OF COMPOSURE
Germany have had a couple of decent opportunities to launch counter-attacks, but seem so intent on playing for the corner and denying Spain time that they’re turning the ball over too easily.
87’ – TIME IS RUNNING OUT
It’s now or never for Spain, who were among the favourites to win the competition but are in very real danger of leaving the Olympics without a medal of any colour.
84’ – MORE CHANGES FOR SPAIN
Garcia and Guijarro come on for Spain as they throw everything at this.
81’ – A BIG CHANCE FOR GWINN
Brand does superbly out on the left and whips in an excellent cross towards Gwinn at the back post. Carmona turns it behind, but the officials award a goal-kick incorrectly.
78’ – JUST A QUICK REMINDER
discovery+ is the streaming home of the Olympic Games, and the only place you can watch every moment of Paris 2024 this summer, including the closing moments of this match.
76’ – COOLING BREAK
The players head for a drink and the Spanish coaches give some words of encouragement to their players. Can they get back into this?
74’ – UNBELIEVABLE SAVE!
Carmona whips in a gem of a cross that is begging for a finish from Hermoso, but Berger makes a superb save from point-blank range to keep Germany ahead.
72’ – CHANGES FOR SPAIN
There still time for Spain to get their hands on a bronze medal and on come Carmona and Caldentey for some impact.
70’ – SHOULD BE 2-0
Popp puts SchĂĽller clean through on goal. She has time and space, but never looks confident and Coll makes a superb save with her outstretched right boot. That was a golden chance for Germany to take complete control of this game.
68’ – BETTER FROM SPAIN
Paralluelo has had an odd game, but she continues to stretch Germany and makes an excellent run before shooting from a tight angle and forcing Berger into a save.
65’ – GOAL! GERMANY 1-0 SPAIN (GWINN, PEN)
Germany take the lead! Gwinn steps up after receiving some treatment and sends the keeper the wrong way, stroking the ball home to make it 1-0. She looks quite overwhelmed with it all in the celebrations – this is a big moment!
63’ – PENALTY!
Gwinn goes down after a challenge with the keeper and, after a brief delay, the referee points the spot. It was a really odd one, but replays show that the decision was the correct one… and quite what Coll was doing isn’t really clear. Perhaps she thought it could be outside the box so didn’t want to use her hands to challenge in the air? That’s the only logical explanation.
62’ – TREATMENT FOR BATLLE
Spain’s full-back is down receiving treatment having claimed a foul in the build-up to that attempt. There wasn’t much in the incident, but the delay in play does give the players a chance to catch their breath and take on some fluids.
60’ – SLICED OFF TARGET
Del Castillo has a crack from the edge of the box but slides her attempt wide of the far top corner. That was better though, Spain are looking good here.
58’ – HEADED OFF TARGET
Gwinn is first to a cross but can’t turn her attempt on target from close range. That was a chance and the game is finally starting to click up through the gears.
57’ – STRAIGHT AT THE KEEPER
Hernandez opts to shoot from range but it’s straight at Berger. The Spanish full-back would have been better placed looking for a cross there.
55’ – A LET-OFF FOR SPAIN
A sliced shot from the edge of the box slides narrowly wide, with Nusken unable to get a touch on it as the ball whistles past her. That looked like a golden chance, although was it offside? It doesn’t matter either way given the Chelsea player failed to get a touch. Goal-kick to Spain.
53’ – A TIRED CROSS FROM BRAND
Germany winger Brand horribly slices a cross behind. That’s the action of a very tired player – those extra-time minutes in the semi-finals are starting to catch up with Germany’s players.
50’ – SIMILAR PATTERN TO PLAY
The game has yet to really open up, with both teams still battling for midfield supremacy. Spain edged the possession stats in the first half, but it was pretty balanced and each side had just three attempts on goal before the break. It needs to open up, and it surely will at some point in this second 45.
46’ – CHANGE FOR GERMANY
There are some fresh legs on for Germany, with BĂĽhl replaced by SchĂĽller in the attack.
46’ – AWAY WE GO AGAIN
The game is back underway with a bronze medal on the line.

HALF TIME – GOALLESS AT THE BREAK
The bronze medal is still there to be won as the two teams head in level at the interval. It’s been an intriguing match rather than a classic, with Germany looking threatening at times but Spain having the best of the chances, including hitting the crossbar on two separate occasions.
45’ – ADDED TIME
Four minutes will be added on at the end of this first half.
43’ – OFF THE BAR!
That’s the closest we’ve come to an opener. Putellas tees up Bonmati on the edge of the box, who curls a beautiful shot past the keeper, only for it to come crashing back off the bar. Hermoso is there on the follow-up and thinks she’s scored, but a deflection sends her effort looping onto the roof of the net. Spain can’t believe they haven’t scored there.
42’ – NOT THE FINISH NEEDED
A free-kick is delivered deep and picks out Hegering, who is lurking behind the Spanish defence. She looks to take it on first time with a tricky volley, but doesn’t catch it right.
39’ – FRUSTRATION FOR PARALLUELO
It’s another good run from the Spanish forward, but she doesn’t quite get it right as she looks to cut back onto her left foot inside the area and throws her head to the sky in frustration. It’s better from Spain though, they’re looking threatening.
37’ – THREAT IN BEHIND
Paralluelo makes some terrific runs and she’s picked out brilliantly with a through ball. She has two defenders to beat and tries to jink her way through, but the ball gets slightly stuck under her feet, losing crucial momentum, and Germany deal with the threat.
34’ – SPAIN CLICKING INTO GEAR
The opportunity for some tactical instructions from the coaches has clearly rubbed off on Spain, who are in complete control since the restart.
31’ – COOLING BREAK TIME
The two teams head to the sidelines for a drink and a pause – which has been the rule in both men’s and women’s competitions throughout this tournament.
29’ – BERGER STANDS TALL
Two brilliant saves in quick succession deny Spain as a ball over the top catches Germany napping. It’s superb goalkeeping… but the flag goes up once the play comes to an end, so any goal would not have counted (replays show it was definitely offside).
26’ – HIGH IN QUALITY, LOW IN ENTERTAINMENT
These are two very good teams but they’re cancelling each other out at the moment.
22’ – LONG-RANGE EFFORT
Shooting from range is suddenly the thing to do in this contest as Popp tries to lob the keeper from just inside the Spain half. It doesn’t come off.
21’ – OFF THE BAR
Was that intentional?! If it was it’s very clever as Abelleira floats a long-range free-kick over the head of a back-tracking Berger, clipping the top of the bar.
19’ – BÜHL HAS A CRACK
Germany win the ball in the centre of the park and transition quickly to put Kiara Bühl into space. She cuts inside and has a shot, but it’s too close to the keeper who makes a comfortable save.
17’ – PROBING POSSESSION
Spain aren’t a side who tend to panic when under pressure, and they’re continuing to play out through central midfield and trying to get a foothold in the game.
15’ – GERMANY ON TOP
A low cross is scrambled away by Spain but only as far as Brand, who fails to take advantage with time on the edge of the box. It’s Germany who are looking the more threatening in these early stages though.
11’ – COLL CLAIMS WELL
A deep cross into the Spain box is taken calmly by Coll. It’s clear that crosses and aerial threat is an approach that Germany are going to focus on today, but so far Spain have had little to worry about.
8’ – BRAND BACK IN HER STRIDE
Dangerous forward Jule Brand went down in the early stages after appearing to land awkwardly on her ankle, but seems back in full stride, which will please the Germany coaches (and her domestic club Wolfsburg).
4’ – TEAMS SIZING EACH OTHER OUT
There’s been some tidy football in the centre of the park, but the star to this game has been a bit of a tactical chess match. Nobody’s really willing to take any early risks.
1’ – AWAY WE GO
The game is underway with Germany in their traditional white strip and Spain in their red shirts with blue shorts and yellow trim.
13:55 – ANTHEM TIME
The teams are out, we’ve had the anthems and we’re all set for kick-off. A bronze medal is on the line.

13:45 – A STAR-STUDDED SPANISH SIDE
The Spain XI is a who’s who of the world’s great players – with Bonmati and Putellas the shiniest stars in a glittering line-up. They start this game as favourites, but have not been at their best in this tournament… not by a long shot.
13:40 – POPP A BIG THREAT
This match-up has the potential to be a real clash of styles, and Spain will know that they need to keep tabs on the towering Alexandra Popp, who remains a serious threat int eh final third as she heads towards the back-end of her career.
13:35 – HOW GERMANY GOT HERE
The USA have been Germany’s kryptonite in this competition. The two faced off in a very strong Group B, with the Americans running out 4-1 winners with a statement performance. And then an extra-time goal from Sophia Smith was enough to separate the sides when they met again in the semis. The Germans haven’t scored a normal-time goal since the group stage, needing penalties to progress past Canada in the quarters.
13:30 – HOW SPAIN GOT HERE
The reigning World Champions missed out on another major title when they came up against an inspired Brazil in the semi-finals. Two late goals helped redress the balance somewhat, but they were distinctly second best in a 4-2 loss in Marseille, and will be looking to bounce back and take a medal home from Paris with a win here in Lyon. The Spanish were good in the group stage, but didn’t hit their stride at all in the knockouts, and were fortunate to even make it to the final four having come from two goals down to take Colombia to penalties in the quarters.
