USA were the first team through to the semi-finals when Trinity Rodman made it 1-0 versus Japan in extra time.
If the American extra time winner wasn't dramatic enough, Spain and Colombia took it a step further in the second semi-final with a penalty shoot-out needed to separate the sides. Eventually, Spain took it on 2(4)-2(2).

BRAZIL'S JOURNEY TO THE KNOCK-OUT STAGES

A 1-0 win versus Nigeria to open the campaign put Brazil in good stead, but a 1-2 defeat to Japan followed. Spain too had too much to offer and took home a 2-0 win, meaning Brazil concluded the group stage on just three points and third in Group C.
In the ranking of third-placed teams, the sides were matched on points and the decision came down to goal difference. Colombia prevailed on 0, but Brazil edged out Australia on -2 versus -3 and just snuck through to the knock-outs.

FRANCE'S JOURNEY TO THE KNOCK-OUT STAGES

France started their campaign with a narrow 3-2 win over Colombia but came up short versus Canada who edged the hosts out 2-1. They bounced back to see off New Zealand 2-1, meaning they concluded the group stage on six points.
Although Canada had played a perfect tournament with three wins, they were penalised six points for their coaching staff's involvement in illegal drone spying at an official training venue. With that, France were ranked first in Group A.

Good evening and thank you for joining our live text coverage of the quarter-final clash between France and Brazil at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Neither team has been on its absolute best so far, and the players will be keen to step things up now that the tournament has reached the knock-out stages. Still, on paper, hosts France should be the slight favourites at the Stade de la Beaujoire, but you can never count out football powerhouse Brazil.
We should be in for a good one!
