He reunites with new Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle, after the pair linked up in winning the Austrian Bundesliga together at RB Salzburg in 2022/23.
Dedic spent time at Wolfsberger and Marseille on loan during his six years at Salzburg, before joining Benfica last summer. He signs for Newcastle on his birthday.
The 24-year-old featured for his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, in which Bosnia reached the knockout stage for the first time in their history, before losing to co-hosts USA.
Dedic told the club's official website: "It's a special feeling and a really big honour for me to join Newcastle United. I'm really happy to be here and can't wait to start playing for the club and the amazing fans.
"Working with Matthias again was a big factor for me. We know each other well, he knows what I can bring on the pitch and I'm really happy to be playing for him again.
"Playing Premier League football at St. James' Park is going to be really special. Every game feels like a big occasion, with an amazing atmosphere. I'm really excited to get started."
Newcastle were in the market for a new right back following Kieran Trippier's departure to join Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer.
The Magpies begin their Premier League campaign on Sunday against Liverpool and there is a chance that Dedic is rushed straight into the starting XI due to Tino Livramento's injury.
Speaking on his arrival, Jaissle said: "He's a player who I know really well, having worked with him from a young age in Austria and followed his career since.
"He will bring both defensive and attacking qualities to our squad, which suits the style of football that we want to play.
"He's athletic, aggressive and technically very good, but also has a lot of potential to develop further."
It has been a summer of significant change at St James' Park, as the club's star players Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have all moved to pastures new in big-money moves, while manager Eddie Howe also walked away from the club.
Jaissle has come in to replace him and Newcastle have invested their funds from exits on young, up-and-coming players.
Dedic follows 20-year-olds Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim and Aladji Bamba from Monaco.
The club also signed two goalkeepers - Lukas Hornicek from Braga and Ewan Jaouen from Reims - as well as 18-year-old prodigy Sean Steur from Ajax.
