Lionel Messi has become the first player to score multiple goals in four consecutive Major League Soccer games, as he bagged a brace in Inter Miami’s 2-1 victory over New England Revolution.
It was the 38-year-old’s fourth double on the spin in the league, taking his tally for the season to 14 goals in 15 games.
The Argentine forward started the impressive scoring streak in May as Miami claimed a 4-2 victory over Montreal and a 5-1 win against Columbus.
After competing in the FIFA Club World Cup, where they were ultimately knocked out by Messi's former side, Paris Saint-Germain, he returned to domestic action in winning ways on Sunday with another victory over Montreal, this time with a 4-1 scoreline.
Speaking after the latest win over Revolution, Miami head coach Javier Mascherano said: "I always say Leo is a special player. For me, the best player that has played this sport in history.
"So, it's unbelievable because he continues doing things that maybe many, many years ago, we cannot see at this moment. But at the end, he's a special player, we are lucky to have him."
It is the latest MLS record to be broken by Messi, having registered the most assists in a single game and most goal contributions in a single game in Miami’s 6-2 victory over New York Red Bulls last year.
The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner opened the scoring on Wednesday midway through the first half as he pounced on a loose defensive header inside the box, before doubling Miami’s lead 11 minutes later as he slotted home following a delightful through ball from Sergio Busquets.
Mascherano had been hoping to give former team-mate Messi some rest following a demanding period of games, but after Revolution halved their deficit in the 80th minute, he saw out the full 90 minutes.
"After New England scored the goal, we were under pressure, so we preferred to keep him on the pitch," the Miami coach said.
"We had to make some decisions. It's not the best situation for us because we know that maybe in the next games, we have to find the moment to give him some rest.
"It's like this. Now we have a lot of games coming because of our participation in the Club World Cup. But we will try to analyse when is the best moment to give him some rest."
Miami are currently sitting fifth in MLS, trailing leaders Cincinnati by seven points, but following their participation in the Club World Cup, they have three games in hand on the teams around them.
