Inter Miami sack Phil Neville as former Manchester United team-mate David Beckham makes 'toughest decision'
Phil Neville arrived at Inter Miami in January 2021 after three years at the helm of the England women’s team. He led the team to the MLS play-offs in 2022, where they crashed out in the first round. Neville departs with the club bottom of the Eastern Conference after 15 games, although still firmly in play-off contention in a closely-packed league.
Inter Miami have sacked Phil Neville after a run of 10 defeats in 13 MLS games.
The club, who are co-owned by Neville’s former Manchester United team-mate David Beckham, are bottom of the Eastern Conference after 15 games.
"Sometimes in this game we have to make the toughest decisions," Beckham said in a statement.
"Sadly we feel the time is right to make a change. I want to personally thank Phil for his hard work, his passion for our club and for his integrity as a person.
"He and his family embraced Miami and he has devoted himself to the drive to bring success to the city and to our fans.
"Phil has made a real contribution to the culture of our club with his qualities as a leader and knowledge as a coach."
Neville arrived in 2021 after leaving the England women’s team. He led Inter Miami, which was only founded in 2018, to the MLS Cup play-offs last year.
“I would like to thank the Inter Miami CF ownership group for their trust and making me a part of this project; the players and staff for their impressive commitment, dedication and hard work; and the fans for their unwavering support for the club since day one,” said Neville.
“I’m grateful to have played a part in the growth of this club and wish Inter Miami CF all the best in the future.”
Inter Miami have been linked with a blockbuster swoop for Lionel Messi, who will leave PSG when his contract expires this month.
A report from French outlet L’Equipe suggested he could join the MLS side before moving to former club Barcelona on loan in a surprise twist.
