Didier Drogba bags incredible brace – then says MLS has lots that needs improving

The Ivorian’s Montreal were 1-0 down in their regular-season finale to rivals Toronto when Drogba conjured two immaculate back-heel finishes to give his side the lead.

The brace took Drogba to 11 goals in 11 matches – and what is more, those strikes came inside a minute.

Incredible stuff.

It all took place on the MLS’ inaugural Decision Day, whereby every game in each conference kicked off at the same time on the final day of the regular season.

On the east, New England Revolution beat New York City 2-1 to claim the last play-off place and join Toronto FC, D.C. United, Drogba’s Montreal Impact, Columbus Crew and New York Red Bulls in the play-offs.

The Western Conference sees FC Dallas, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders FC, LA Galaxy and Sporting Kansas City into the play-offs.

While the Decision Day was a resounding success, Drogba is insistent that the league has a long way to go before it can be considered to be in the same class as top European leagues.

“The MLS is a good league, with some good teams, and you can see that there’s some good football players here, but I think if this league wants to be one of the best in the world in the next few years I think there’s a lot of things to improve, like the travelling for the players, and (not) playing on turf surfaces,” Drogba said.

“If you want to compare this league to the English one, to the French, to the Spanish, to the big leagues, it has a lot to do. But I hope the league (will get better) and I think it’s on the way.”

Drogba will face Toronto FC again in the first round of the play-offs.
