Liverpool supporters expressed their frustration at manager Brendan Rodgers after it was revealed that the Reds were set to bid £32.5m for Christian Benteke.

Benteke, 24, has been heavily linked with a move away from Villa Park since January and Liverpool were one of several high profile suitors reportedly interested in him.

The Belgium international, who scored 42 Premier League goals in three seasons at Villa, is now rumoured to become the Reds' seventh signing of the season after the arrivals of Adam Bogdan, Nathaniel Clyne, Roberto Firmino, Joe Gomez, Danny Ings and James Milner.

Liverpool's recent track record hasn't been particularly fruitful when it comes to buying strikers in the transfer market, with Andy Carroll famously being bought for £35m in 2011 and sold to West Ham for £15m two seasons later.
