Marseille 0-2 PSG - Vitinha on target as 10-man visitors defeat Marseille in Ligue 1 clash

It took until the 85th minute for PSG to feel comfortable in what was a tense Ligue 1 encounter against Marseille at Stade Velodrome on Sunday evening. Vitinha opened the scoring for the visitors with a crucial goal in the 53rd minute, but Marseille remained very much in the contest until Goncalo eventually netted a second to consolidate the victory with five minutes remaining.

‘Absolutely sensational’ - Vitinha gives PSG the lead against Marseille

PSG had 10 men for over half of the game and Luis Enrique risked the wrath of Kylian Mbappe by substituting the star man, but the Ligue 1 leaders still came out on top in Le Classique.
Lucas Beraldo was dismissed with a straight red card after VAR intervention for a foul on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang five minutes before half-time.
PSG dominated the early play without creating too many opportunities but in the second half they played on the break and scored two goals in this manner, through Vitinha and Goncalo Ramos.
Mbappe was unimpressed when he was replaced with Ramos midway through the half, but Enrique will feel the decision was proved correct.
Marseille had a glut of efforts on target with Gianluigi Donnarumma making seven saves in all for the visitors who are now 12 points clear at the top of Ligue 1.

Talking Point - PSG show resilience they may soon need

This was far from a performance which would strike fear in Barcelona or other potential UEFA Champions League opponents, but it showed something we rarely see from the Paris outfit. They were the better side in the first half but the sending off of Beraldo forced them to defend much of the game on the edge of their box as you will imagine they will be forced to do in the quarter-final, second leg at the Nou Camp in two-and-a-half weeks. They were helped by Marseille's profligate nature in front of goal, but on a night where there was little going forward to take the breath away, the dedication to collective defending was impressive.

‘What a sensational counter’ - PSG break at pace and Ramos wraps up win at Marseille

Player of the Match - Vitinha (PSG)

It might be harsh on Donnarumma given the number of saves he made but none were those you would not expect him to make. Indeed, Vitinha's block from Amine Harit might have matched the multiple saves the Italian stopper made from the Marseille winger. In possession, as he has been for much of the season, Vitinha was near immaculate keeping the ball while playing to his team-mates in attacking positions - in addition to the fine one-two he worked with Ousmane Demble for the goal.

Match Highlights

17' VERETOUT WITH A GREAT EFFORT FROM EDGE OF BOX! And it took a coat of paint off the post with Donnarumma beaten.
40' RED CARD FOR BERALDO! The referee gives a straight red which seems ridiculous as Aubameynag was fifty yards from goal on the touchline. A second yellow would have been fair though ans would have brought about the same end result in terms of succumbing the visitors to ten men tonight.
53'GOAL! MARSEILLE 0-1 PSG (VITINHA)! On the break PSG were three versus two and Vitinha passed wide to Dembele who cut the ball back to him and he controlled before guiding wide of Lopez's right arm.
58' GOAL DISALLOWED! Veretout smashes home. After Harit's shot had been saved, the ball fell to Veretout who smashed the ball against the deck and it beats Donnaumma. But it is disallowed as Henrique was in an offside position and adjudged to have been in the Italian stopper's eyeline.
76' DONNARUMMA NOT TAKING ANY CHANCES! Merlin's cross was deflected off Hakimi and for a moment it looked like it may drift over the Italian stopper but he got back to punch over the bar.
85' GOAL! MARSEILLE 0-2 PSG (RAMOS) On the break the ball is played square by Asensio to Ramos in the box and he takes a couple of touches before slotting home.
87' GREAT STOP FROM DONNARUMMA! First he dives to push the ball away from Moumbagna and then Harit drives a low shot at goal and the Italian parries away.
