Fernandez announced his decision to quit and was immediately linked with a return to Marseille, the club he left in 2006 in order to take charge at Auxerre, as uncertainty surrounds the position of their boss, Didier Deschamps.
However, Nancy may also be an option as they are looking for a replacement for Pablo Correa.
"Nancy have a chance, that's true," he said in an interview with L'Equipe. "I met with president Jacques Rousselot in Paris - not in Nancy as I have read - and I realised he really wanted me to come. It is important to hear a president say this."
He added of his decision to leave Auxerre: "If the club was in trouble, I would have stayed. This is not the case and I go with my head held high. Auxerre are a strong club."
