Girona v Barcelona clash in La Liga set for United States
Barcelona will travel nearly 5,000 miles for their away match with Girona after it was picked to be the inaugural La Liga match in the United States, according to reports in Spain.
The Catalan derby on January 27 will now take place in Miami, with Girona sacrificing their home fixture for potential lucrative returns.
Girona season tickets holders can seek a refund of around 40 per cent should they decide not to travel to the match, Sport say, while 1,500 free flights are available for those who want to attend.
The club, who are also offering 5,000 free tickets to the reverse fixture at Camp Nou to appease fans, are expected to make close to €4 million from the game.
Spain’s players’ association have previously claimed they could strike if a regular-season match was played in the US.
La Liga signed a 15-year deal to play one match in North America per season in August.
