Newcastle United 2-1 Fulham: Carabao Cup quarter-final result as Lewis Miley scores late winner for defending champions

Defending champions Newcastle United left it late, but they did enough to overpower Fulham and reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Yoane Wissa and Lewis Miley were on target for The Magpies on Wednesday, as Eddie Howe’s side recorded a 2-1 win at St. James’ Park.

Wissa opened the scoring after 10 minutes, finding himself in the right place at the right time to tap home from close range after Benjamin Lecomte had diverted Josh Murphy’s low cross into the forward’s path.

The goal marked the first for Wissa on his first start for the club, following a £55 million move from Brentford in the summer.

But just five minutes later, Fulham were level when Sasa Lukic met Antonee Robinson’s pinpoint cross to head excellently past Aaron Ramsdale.

The game was up and down from there, with both teams struggling to create chances and break each other down.

In the closing stages, Miley was denied by a fantastic Lecomte save to win a corner. Sandor Tonali whipped a cross in from the set-piece, which stand-in right-back Miley expertly glanced beyond the French goalkeeper to snatch the win for Newcastle.

Newcastle join Chelsea and Manchester City in the draw for the semi-final, while Arsenal and Crystal Palace contest their quarter-final tie on December 23.

The Magpies keep their Carabao Cup run going and their title defence alive!

It's now two years since they lost in the competition, and they're in the hat for the 2025/26 semi-finals.

Woltemade does well to hold off a defender before laying the ball to Lewis Miley in the box, who tries to slot home in the bottom left corner, but Lecomte makes a top-class save to deny him!

We're into added time at the end of the second half, and there is still plenty of time for each side to find a winner!

Newcastle are pushing for a winner with their fresh attack, but Fulham are threatening to hit them on the counter-attack.

It's making for a frantic finish!

This will go straight to a penalty shoot-out, should it end level at full-time.

The same goes for Josh Murphy and Elanga.

Newcastle now have a fresh front three of Gordon, Woltemade and Elanga.

Gordon comes on and takes up his position on the left-hand side.

Wilson's free-kick is met by Anderson, who heads back across goal for Jimenez, who sees his touch deflected wide.

The consequent corner is cleared by Newcastle, who are preparing two more changes.

This one could still go either way as we approach the last 10 minutes of normal time.

21-year-old Alex Murphy takes his place at left-back.

Livramento is receiving treatment for a leg injury and looks like he will need to be replaced.

Fortunately, he's able to walk off, although it's not too clear what type of injury he's sustained.

Smith-Rowe is replaced by King, while Kevin is taken off for Traore.

Wissa and Willock make way for Woltemade and Tonali.

It looks as though Eddie Howe will make a couple of subs, with Woltemade and Tonali stripped and ready for action.

Newcastle are beginning to get a foothold in this second half and look most likely to score the next goal.
