Grimsby Town’s epic adventure in the League Cup has continued after beating Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 to reach the fourth round of the competition.
Jaze Kabia scored the only goal of the game at Hillsborough to ensure the League Two side - who beat Manchester United in the previous round - got past another club from a higher division.
Championship side Wednesday continue to face financial struggles, with their lack of first team squad options resulting in a youthful side being named for the match.
Goalkeeper Ethan Horvath was the only player to keep his place in the starting line-up from their last league match against Bristol City - with a number of players from the club’s U21 squad stepping up.
The match-winning moment for Grimsby came from a set piece, with Kabia heading into the net to take the club into the fourth round for the first time since 2001.
Elsewhere, Walter Benitez was the hero on his Crystal Palace debut as he saved two penalties in a shootout to beat London rivals Millwall - after the match finished 1-1.
Chris Richards had given the hosts the lead at Selhurst Park but Ryan Leonard headed an equaliser in injury time to take it to spot kicks.
Tristan Crama and Aidomo Emakhu saw their efforts saved by Benitez to take Oliver Glasner’s side through to the next round.
Aston Villa scored their first goal of the season, but that was not enough to prevent them crashing out of the League Cup at the hands of fellow Premier League side Brentford.
Harvey Elliott scored on his full Villa debut as he capitalised on poor defending to score the opening goal, which crept through the legs of Hakon Valdimarsson.
Aaron Hickey equalised in the second half for Brentford to take the tie to a penalty shootout.
Valdimarsson may not have covered himself in glory earlier in the night, but he proved to be the difference in the end as he saved spot kicks from John McGinn and Matty Cash to allow Mikkel Damsgaard to slot home the winning penalty.
