Football news - Jose Mourinho: ‘I knew we were in trouble with Phil Jones’
Jose Mourinho has admitted he knew Manchester United were in trouble when Phil Jones stepped up to take a penalty in the Carabao Cup shootout defeat to Derby County.
Jones’ tame effort, the 16th of an otherwise flawless set of spotkicks, was saved by Scott Carson as the Championship side progressed to the fourth round to heap further misery on United at Old Trafford.
And while Mourinho avoided criticising his players directly after the match, his words will hardly inject Jones or fellow centre-back Eric Bailly with confidence.
"We practise penalties and we see it in training and when we get past the sixth penalty I know we're in trouble with Bailly and Jones," he told Sky Sports.
The match saw Rams boss Frank Lampard beat Mourinho, his former manager at Chelsea.
"I'm shell shocked. What a performance," Lampard said.
"To go down early at Old Trafford and play as well as they did was superb. We had the personality to take penalties and play the way we did. I am a proud manager."
