Atletico Madrid have enjoyed a fine start to the season, currently sitting fourth in La Liga, six points off first place. Diego Simeone has signed a three-year contract extension which will see him stay on as Atletico Madrid manager until June 2027.
Having been appointed as Atletico boss back in December 2011, the 53-year-old is currently in his 12th year in charge at the Spanish club.
The Argentine holds the record of having overseen the most games, 642, having won eight major honours with the Rojiblancos, including two La Liga titles and two UEFA Europa League trophies.
The news was confirmed on Thursday by the club, who wrote in a statement: “Diego Pablo Simeone will remain coach of our club until 30 June 2027.
“The Argentine coach signed his new contract in the offices of the Civitas Metropolitano, thus signing the continuity of the project that began in 2011."
Following his appointment, Simeone enjoyed success in his first season at the club, winning their first Europa League title in the 2011-12 season before going on to claim victory in the tournament again in 2018.
He would go on to guide them to La Liga glory in 2014 and 2021, while also winning two UEFA Super Cups and the Copa del Rey in 2013.
Simeone also enjoyed a successful playing career with the club, returning 30 goals in 167 appearances across all competitions, winning the league title and the Spanish Cup in 1996.
It comes as Atletico sit fourth in the Spanish top-flight, six points off Girona in first place, having enjoyed a fine start to the 2023-24 season, losing just one of their last 10 matches across all competitions, including a 6-0 victory against Celtic in the UEFA Champions League.
