The Norwegian prodigy has been linked with a loan move this season, but the coach – while expressing his desire to keep the player – admits Castilla boss Zinedine Zidane has the final say in determining the 16-year-old’s fate.
“We must thank Norway and the host city Oslo,” Benitez said at a press conference. “There are many fans here. It’s always good to experience an environment like this. Knowing that there’s such expectation is gratifying for everyone.
Asked about Odegaard, Benitez said he will play the youngster and hopes to keep him at the club for the upcoming campaign.
“Martin Odegaard is young and talented," Benitez said. "Our desire is for him to improve, so he’s going to play tomorrow.
“I don’t know whether he’ll start or play in the second half, but I have great confidence in him, even if he’s still young and must have patience.
“His future? We have to do what’s best for him. We must talk to [Castilla boss Zinedine] Zidane and make a decision.
“We’d prefer him to stay with us, continuing to train and develop every day. I don’t believe that the pressure of Madrid is a problem for him. He’s a smart kid.
“Valerenga are a good team, who have played 19 League games, are second [in their League], in good shape and want to impose themselves.
“I expect a very intense game. I hope we do well by winning and playing good football.”
