Real win Madrid derby

First-half goals from Karim Benzema and Mesut Ozil had Real ahead after half an hour, while Atletico were denied continually at the other end by goalkeeper Iker Casillas. Sergio Aguero finally got Atletico on the board in the final few minutes, but it was too little too late.

Jose Mourinho's side started much the brighter and they took a deserved lead on 11 minutes. The in-form Benzema latched on to Sami Khedira's flick forward and prodded a clinical finish past David de Gea for his 12th goal in his last 11 games.

That goal spurred on Atletico, who were looking for their first derby win over Real in a decade and had already suffered defeat in the league clash at the Bernabeu earlier in the season as well as in their two-legged Copa del Rey tie.

Jose Antonio Reyes had a free-kick from a wide angle tipped over the bar by Casillas, before the Spain keeper denied Aguero with several quality saves.

However, Atletico were made to pay for not converting their opportunities when Real doubled their lead on 32 minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo should have had a penalty when he was impeded by Tomas Ujfalusi, but the same passage of play ended with Marcelo pulling the back from the byline and Ozil curling a deft finish past de Gea.

Aguero then picked up a yellow card for diving in the area which means he will be suspended for Atletico's next match, and Ronaldo saw an effort flash over the bar before the half-time whistle came.

Casillas remained in inspired form after the break, saving an effort from range by substitute Koke before denying Aguero once again, low at the near post this time.

Ronaldo failed to add to his phenomenal haul of 28 league goals this season when he headed Ozil's inviting cross over the bar from close range, then later firing into the side netting.

Aguero finally got on the scoresheet with four minutes of the allotted 90 remaining after playing a neat one-two with Koke and hitting the far bottom corner with a shot Casillas couldn't parry with his fingertips.

By that stage, however, many of the home fans had already filed out of the ground, and Atletico could not summon a late rally to avoid losing their fourth derby in one season.
