Referee Carlos Megia Davila suspended the match in the 44th minute with the score at 1-1 on aggregate.
Deportivo criticised the authorities for not disqualifying Valencia from the competition. The club believe that under such circumstances, they should have been awarded an automatic 3-0 victory.
Meanwhile, the Galician press were quick to point the finger of blame at Valencia manager Quique Sanchez Flores for inciting the incident, claiming his pre-match comments of a hostile atmosphere in the Mestalla stadium provoked the actions of certain members of the crowd.
Meanwhile, the Police along with Valencia C.F are appealing for help from the public to identify those responsible for the incident.
ROBINHO BACK ON FORM
Following a difficult few months struggling to adapt to Spanish football, the media are hailing the recent form of Brazilian Robinho. The former Santos star had a disappointing start to his Real Madrid career, but in January has scored four goals and looked far more menacing to opposition defences.
New coach Juan Ramon Lopez Caro is given much of the credit, deploying Robinho on the left side of a midfield four, as opposed to Wanderley Luxemburgo's tendency to play him up front. The smile has returned to the face of the diminutive 'crack' and the striker himself admits he feels he is improving with every game.
Meanwhile, Robinho's team-mates Ronaldo and Jonathon Woodgate have returned to training with the rest of the team and could return to first team action in 10 days when Real Madrid visit Celta Vigo.
RODRIGUEZ EXTENDS CONTRACT
Argentine international centre-back Gonzalo Rodriguez has extended his contract with Villarreal for an extra two years until 2011, the Primera Liga club said on Friday.
The highly rated 21-year-old joined Villarreal from San Lorenzo in 2004 for an estimated 3 million euros and has become a fixture in the club's back four.
Villarreal are in fifth place in the Primera Liga and face Glasgow Rangers in the last 16 of the Champions League.
