Jose Mourinho hit back at Pep Guardiola, claiming that he won his three Premier League titles "fairly and cleanly" after the Manchester City manager’s comments in mid-week.
The Catalan boss held up six fingers in reference to the number of titles he has claimed since moving to England, during City’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield last Sunday.
In a press conference before their 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Wednesday, Guardiola was reminded that Mourinho did likewise with three fingers while at Tottenham.
That signalled the beginning of the end for the Portuguese head coach in north London, and Guardiola was asked whether a similar destiny awaited himself after his gesture.
"I hope not in my case," said Guardiola. "Maybe we are similar like Jose, but he won three and I won six! We are together in those situations.
"It was just to make our fans feel that what we have done is extraordinary. I want to prove that we are an incredible football club.
"Sooner or later, it’s going to be the end but I will try to extend as much as possible for the best of my club."

Mourinho has taken his Fenerbahce side to second in the Turkish Super Lig, and has overseen a run of four straight victories ahead of the Istanbul derby with Besiktas on Saturday.
In his pre-match press conference, the former Chelsea boss was asked about how he was adapting to life in Turkish football when he brought up Guardiola’s comments.
"When others provoke the fans against the referee, nothing happens, you know that," said Mourinho on Friday.
"I don’t want to lose my nature. I live in your country, I have to respect, learn and adapt. I just want to adapt to the things I participate in.

"I want to win, but I want to win cleanly, fairly. If I cannot win cleanly, I prefer to lose.
"Guardiola said something like this to me yesterday. He won six trophies and I won three. But I won fairly and cleanly.
"If I lost, I want to congratulate my opponent for being better than me. I don’t want to win by dealing with 150 [sic] cases."
Mourinho referenced the 115 charges brought to Manchester City by the Premier League over alleged breaches of its Financial Fair Play rules, which have been denied by the club.
