Messi became emotional after scoring for Argentina against Algeria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June, and later admitted that it had nothing to do with football and that he had suffered "a few difficult days".
That prompted the Messi family to issue a statement to inform the public of Jorge's health problems, but revealed he was "recovering well".
Messi recently returned to Major League Soccer (MLS) action for Inter Miami, but missed the MLS All-Star Game at the end of July, reportedly to spend time with his father before returning to club football duties.
Messi and his father shared a close relationship, with Jorge remaining by Lionel’s side when he moved to Barcelona's La Masia academy at age 13.
Jorge became Messi's agent when the player turned 14, as he guided his son on his journey to becoming one of the greatest players of all time.
Messi's former club at youth level, Newell's Old Boys, released a statement on social media on Saturday to confirm the news of Jorge's passing.
It read: "Club Atletico Newell's Old Boys bids farewell with deep sorrow and grief to Jorge Messi, who passed away at the age of 68 in the city of Rosario.
"Recognised leproso fan, businessman, and father of the Argentine national team captain, Lionel Andres Messi.
"Jorge was the pillar and the person who supported with vision, rigor, and affection the career of the greatest player of all time alongside his wife, Celia Cuccittini.
"His constant companionship and behind-the-scenes leadership were essential in backing every step of Lionel, from his beginnings at Malvinas to the pinnacle of world football glory.
"Thank you for teaching him to love these colors. Farewell forever, leproso."
The Argentine Football Association added: "From here, we stand in solidarity with the entire family during this difficult time and send the most heartfelt, warm and affectionate embrace."
In a statement later on Saturday, Barcelona praised Jorge for his "commitment to our club, for entrusting us with the beginnings and the most glorious years of his son Leo's football career."
