England player ratings: Stones should start from now on, but it's not likely

Tom Bennett runs the rule over the England players who featured against France.

Joe Hart

Quick off his line to deny Cabaye in the only dangerous moment of the first half, he then undid his good work by spilling the ball in the area. Still England’s first-choice… for now. 6

Nathaniel Clyne

Tireless in his running and a useful outlet when England play a more narrow midfield, such as this evening. It will take injury or a substantial dip in form to push him out of the starting XI. 6

John Stones

His composure on the ball and reading of the game is hugely impressive and he will surely be an England regular for many years to come. Is he ready to start now? Probably. Will he? Doubtful. 7

Gary Cahill

England’s elder-statesman at the back, Cahill was solid again and brings a leadership that other central defenders lack. However, the emergence of Stones and Smalling has put his position under threat. 7

Kieran Gibbs

This was not the left-back’s worst evening in an England shirt, but he was still the weakest of the defensive unit and faces a fight to claim a place in the squad. His call-up this time was fortuitous given a lack of club action… and he didn’t really take advantage. 6

Eric Dier

It has been many years since England had a genuine defensive midfielder playing at a high level in the Premier League, but Dier took his club performances straight on to the international stage and gave England the platform that they so often lack. 8

Dele Alli

Hodgson was heavily criticised for picking Alli so early in his Premier League career, but the midfielder has something special and fits exactly into the style of play that the manager is looking to deploy in the summer. This was a wonderful performance and he is in a much stronger position for it. Now we just need to be careful with the hype. 9

Ross Barkley

It wasn’t Barkley’s most sparkling performance in an England jersey, but his positional discipline and composure on the ball would have encouraged the coaches far more than his ‘Roy of the Rovers’ efforts in previous games. 8

Raheem Sterling

Not at his best, Sterling still offered a cutting-edge and spark that England need to unlock the excellent France defence. His cross for Rooney’s goal was a peach. 7

Harry Kane

The striker may not have scored, but this was his best England display. Brilliant at holding the ball up and linking play in the opposition half, Kane showed that he is far more than just a finisher. 8

Wayne Rooney

Still one of England’s classiest operators, Rooney rediscovered some of his spark and produced a finish of top quality for his goal. He will be captain and start under Hodgson, and on the evidence of tonight rightly so. 8
Subs:
Butland – 45 minutes is not enough to stake a claim for a permanent spot between the sticks, but his superb save from Martial and commanding presence hinted at a first-choice England future. 8
Lallana – There wasn’t much left in the game by the time he came on, but he was typically tidy on the ball and is a useful player to have in the squad. 6
Shelvey, Bertrand, Jones – Not enough time to make an impact.
