Rob Green the hero as Chelsea beat Lyon on penalties
International Champions Cup, Stamford Bridge - Chelsea 0 Lyon 0 (Chelsea win 5-4 on penalties)
Chelsea put the Thibaut Courtois saga behind them as Rob Green saved a penalty on debut to help his side win 5-4 in a shootout against Lyon.
Maurizio Sarri, who started Marcin Bulka in goal after Courtois did not turn up for training, turned to Green in the second half and he was the hero after the game finished 0-0.
But Sarri would have been more impressed by defender Ethan Ampadu who stole the show with his passing and positioning after being one of 11 changes from the Blues side that lost 2-0 to Manchester City in the Community Shield.
Bulka pulled off a good save to keep out Memphis Depay’s drive while Tammy Abraham did not take his opportunity of a rare start after putting two headers wide.
In the second half both sides made a string of changes with Eden Hazard, Marcos Alonso, Jorginho, Ross Barkley and Cesar Azpiliceuta all getting a run out.
And all five subs scored in the shootout with Hazard grabbing the winner after Green saved Pape Cheikh Diop's spot kick as the Blues returned to winning ways ahead of their Premier League opener against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
TALKING POINT
Which Chelsea players played their way into Sarri's plans? Willian looks most likely to play a role against Huddersfield after moments of quality but Bakayoko and Abraham will be disappointed with their contributions. And Ampadu deserves a place on the bench for the new season after an impressive display.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Ethan Ampadu (Chelsea): The David Luiz lookalike enhanced his reputation. His passing was composed and bold and he anticipated danger brilliantly with a series of blocks and interceptions.
