Football news - Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho told he can buy defender in January - reports
Jose Mourinho has been told by Manchester United he can strengthen his defence in January, according to reports.
The Portuguese manager has reached an agreement with executive vice chairman Ed Woodward and would like to sign Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly after growing frustrated at the lack of signings over the summer.
However, Koulibaly could be too expensive, with his price tag set to be around £90million, so Mourinho could turn his attentions to Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgium international will be significantly cheaper because his contract expires in the summer, so he could join for around £40million.
He would be an ideal solution for United, who have struggled at the back this season, with his Champions League experience also a huge bonus.
United beat Fulham 4-1 over the weekend to ease the pressure on Mourinho, whose future had been called into question with his team slipping to well outside of the top four spots in the Premier League.
