Wayne Rooney hits out at paper coverage of record feat
Wayne Rooney has taken to social media to hit out at the Mail on Sunday’s coverage after he equalled Manchester United's all-time scoring record in the 4-0 win over Reading.
The England captain scored in the seventh minute of his 543rd United appearance to move alongside Charlton on 249 goals having played 215 fewer games than the England great.
The Mail - and others, it must be added - focused some of their coverage on what turned out to be a slight misunderstanding between Rooney and Reading and former Manchester City player George Evans.
Evans had appeared to shun Rooney when the England captain tried to swap shirts with the Reading centre-half but later explained that he had preferred to do the swap in the tunnel considering the heavy nature of the defeat.
"I find it amazing that I equal Sir Bobby Charlton's record and this is a headline in the Mail," tweeted the England international.
Rooney, 30, can break the record when United face Hull City in the EFL Cup on January 10.
