Ruben Amorim believes UEFA Europa League success not enough for Manchester United - 'Nothing can save our season'
Updated 06/03/2025 at 08:17 GMT
Ruben Amorim has exclusively told TNT Sports that winning the UEFA Europa League would not be enough to "save" Manchester United's campaign. The Red Devils' position in the league means the tournament is likely to be their only route back into Europe for next season. They currently sit in the bottom half of the table and have been dumped out of the FA Cup. Amorim says that is not good enough.

Ruben Amorim insists winning the UEFA Europa League would not mean Manchester United have had a good season.
The Red Devils are through to the last 16 of the competition, where they will face Real Sociedad, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.
It is their first match since a disappointing FA Cup fifth-round exit at the hands of Fulham at Old Trafford.
That cranked up the pressure on the manager, who arrived in November, but has been unable to lift the club up the Premier League table.
They currently sit in 14th place in the top flight, in which they have won only three of their last 11 outings.
Amorim therefore admits that the season cannot be considered a success, even if they lift a trophy in Europe.

Speaking exclusively to TNT Sports, the Portuguese said: "It's just the pressure of winning. In this club, everything is so important.
"Just the pressure of winning is always the same. Not just winning, but also the performance. I think we have, in this moment, a lot of pressure on us.
"People look at this competition as the only competition that can save our season. I don't see it like that. Nothing can save our season.

'One game can change the way you see yourself' - Amorim backs Hojlund for turnaround

"In this club, you have to perform in every competition. I understand that it's really important that we want to win and go to the next stage.
"The season has been really tough in our position in the league. That's what I mean.
"I don't look at things to save something. I just want to be better as a coach and for my team to perform better."
Goals have been a major problem for United over the course of the campaign.
Rasmus Hojlund has still only scored seven times this season, with the most recent of those coming 18 games ago in December. The Europa League, however, has been kind to the 22-year-old Dane.
Five of his strikes have come in the competition, and Amorim believes the return of the tournament provides the striker with a good chance to end his drought.
"I think it is," he continued. "In football, anything can change in one month. One game can change your way of seeing yourself.
"It's another opportunity and in football it's a good thing to have the next match to change things.
"We don't create a lot of situations. That's it. Sometimes we cannot serve our forwards and strikers as we should serve.
"I think we have to improve as a team. If we improve as a team the way we play, we are going to help every player."

As well as Hojlund having an opportunity to gain some much-needed confidence, Amorim believes the same stands for the rest of the team.
There has been plenty of talk over United's form in recent weeks, with some even questioning the manager's position.
He says the discourse will not stop, regardless of results, but admits a return to winning ways would help.
This club has all the noises," he added. "If one subject ends, they will start another. We have to deal with that.
"It will be really important. You can feel it that the week is so much different when we win games.
"Like in any team or football club, you need to win to be happy, to prepare the next game. If not, you will prepare, but it will be tougher."
