England versus Switzerland LIVE: semi-final place up for grabs in Dusseldorf

England have reached the semi-finals of a major tournament for the third time in four attempts under Gareth Southgate, beating Switzerland on penalties on a tense afternoon in Dusseldorf.

It was left to penalties to decide the match. Manuel Akanji saw his penalty saved by Jordan Pickford, which allowed Trent Alexander-Arnold to score England’s fifth penalty in the shootout and settle the contest.

Breel Embolo gave Switzerland the lead with 15 minutes to go in normal time, before a low, long-range drive from Bukayo Saka drew the game level five minutes later.

The match was a stalemate throughout, with few chances created by either side. In the extra-time period Xherdan Shaqiri almost scored directly from a corner, hitting the angle of post and bar.

England will now face the winner of Netherlands versus Turkey, in a semi-final Dortmund on Wednesday night.

After a brutally tense afternoon, England have edged past Swittzerland and made it to the last four for the third time in four tournaments.

Alexander-Arnold has the winning kick at his mercy and he buries it, smashing the ball high into the corner on the left with Sommer going the wrong way. Mayhem ensues, and England are into the semi-finals!

Pickford goes big to the right and Amdouni calmly rolls it down the middle to keep Switzerland in this.

Toney takes the Toney penalty, of course he scores. England are so close now...

It's a beauty from Shaqiri, high into the side-netting on the right even though Pickford went the right way.

This takes some stones. Saka, who missed in the Euro 2020 final, sends Sommer the wrong way and rolls the ball into the right side-netting.

It's a replica of the Bellingham penalty, dispatched with ease.

Ice cold from Bellingham, who takes a delayed step before rolling it bottom right, with Sommer going the wrong way again.

It's a short, two-step run up by Akanki who goes low to the right, but it's too close to Pickford who keeps it out!

A perfect strike from Palmer, sending Sommer definitively the wrong way and driving the ball into the left corner.

They'll be at the England end, with Cole Palmer to go first.

Amdouni immediately warms Pickford's hands with a long shot, and from a cross that follows Widmer volleys a difficult chance over at the back post. My days this is tense.

The final two, Amdouni and Sierro replace Freuler and Aebischer.

They break, through Shaqiri and Zuber, switching the ball right to Widmer. Eze does well to block the cross and it's a corner to Switzerland with three to go. How about this - Shaqiri takes the kick and goes for goal, whipping it to the near post and hitting the angle off post and bar! The ball bounces away, what an effort.

Alexander-Arnold replaces Foden, no doubt with penalties in mind.

The Swiss create two half-chances at the back post, for Widmer and Schar respectively. Both come to nought; the players look knackered.

It looks like an off the ball 'clash' with Shaqiri but there didn't seem much in it. Play goes on, and eventually Bellingham gets up off the floor and continues.

For Switzerland Embolo comes off, replaced by Shaqiri; Toney takes the place of Kane for England.
