Austria versus Turkiye LIVE: Turkiye lead after first minute goal in Leipzig

Turkiye kept their Euro 2024 campaign going with a thrilling 2-1 win over Austria to reach the quarterfinals.

Both of their goals came from corner kicks, both whipped in by Arda Guler and both finished off by centre back Merih Demiral. The first effort came after just 57 seconds, with Demiral extending the lead just before the hour.

Austria pinned Turkiye back for the remainder of the half and got back into the match from a corner of their own when substitute Michael Gregoritsch turned in a loose ball at the back post.

With the Turkish players tiring their goalkeeper Mert Gunok pulled off the save of the tournament in the final minute of added time, turning a towering header from Christoph Baumgartner around the post when an equaliser looked certain.

This victory means Turkiye will now face the Netherlands in Berlin on Saturday.

Turkiye have done it! A thrilling contest comes to an end in Leipzig.

Austria lob a hopeful ball to the back post. Baumgartner rises, and thumps a towering downward header to the bottom corner. It looks in for all the world, until Gunok, dives across to turn the ball around the post at full stretch! That is an unbelievable save!

Turkiye break and find Yilmaz, who cuts across the face of the area and shoots, but it's well saved by Pentz.

Yilmaz is running himself into dust here, and his high pressing wins a throw-in.

We'll have a minimum of four minutes.

Akturkoglu leads a frenetic break, and feeds Yilmaz, who is through on the right. There's just too much on the pass though, and Pentz slides out of his area to clear with his feet.

Turkiye look shattered here. Can they hold out? More time goes off the clock as Baumgartner heads over the delivery from Sabitzer.

Posch lofts a cross into the area. Gunok races out to punch clear but hits only thin air, as Baumgartner sneaks in behind and glances the ball off target! Gunok will be breathing a deep sigh there.

Kahveci replcaces Kokcu, who has either cramp or a pulled hamstring.

A cross from Sabitzer flicks off a head and lands with Baumgartner, momentarily free at the back post. Ayhan reads the play though, and boots the ball out of Baumgartner to big cheers.

Yildiz and Guler depart, replaced by Yokuslu and Akturkoglu.

Sabitzer whips a cross in to Arnautovic at the near post, but Bardakci reads it well and heads out for a corner.

Grillitsch has a go from distance, trying to bounce a shot through Gunok. It's a decent tactic in these conditions but he catches it to well, and Gunok sucks it into the bread basket.

It's Guler that leads it again, and eventually the ball finds Yilmaz on his own in the area. He does well to reach the byline and cut it back, but there are no Turkish players there to take advantage.

You can sense one coming, as the rain teems down in Leipzig. What a lucky charm Gregoritsch is; in this fixture back in March, he helped himself to a hat-trick.

Game back on, and it;s another goal from a corner! Sabitzer whips it to the penalty spot, where Posch glances the ball across goal. It drifts to Gregoritsch, completely unmarked at the back post, and he half-volleys the ball into the roof of the net!

Laimer and Lienhart depart, replaced by Grillitsch and Wober.

He brings down the lovewire Guler again, and is lucky not to get a second yellow.

After the goal, Guler turned to the Austrian fans to give it the universal what-are-you-saying-now gesture. Not that you can hear much in Leipzig right now other than the raucous celebrations of the Turkish fans.
