Late goals from Portugal's Ariza Makukula and Cristiano Ronaldo gave them a laboured 2-1 win over Kazakhstan.

Portugal, who move within a point of group leaders Poland, went ahead in the 84th minute when substitute Makukula headed home Ricardo Quaresma's right-wing cross.

Cristiano Ronaldo then powered in a second goal during added time following a pass from Nani before Kazakhstan got a late consolation with a Dmitry Byakov header.

The win leaves Portugal on 23 points, three clear of third-placed Finland and Serbia with two matches remaining. The top two teams qualify for the finals in Austria and Switzerland.

Serbia kept alive their hopes of reaching the Euro 2008 finals after two goals from striker Nikola Zigic inspired them to a 6-1 away win over Azerbaijan.

Left back Dusko Tosic gave Serbia the start they wanted in the fourth minute after a one-two with Zigic, who doubled their lead in the 17th when he tucked in at the near post a perfect low cross by midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic.

The home side pulled one back after Samir Aliyev capitalised on a defensive blunder in the 26th minute and drilled the ball past the advancing keeper but the Serbs buried their hosts' hopes of a comeback with two quick goals shortly before the break.

Bosko Jankovic made it 3-1 with a ferocious long-range free kick and Zigic capped an excellent first half when he rounded the keeper and steered the ball home from a tight angle.

Susbstitute Milan Smiljanic capped his international debut with a piledriver from 25 metres to make it 5-1 before Danko Lazovic, who also came on in the second half, completed the scoring with a fine volley.

Three second-half goals gave Belgium a 3-0 home win over Armenia.

After weathering a storm in the first period, Armenia finally succumbed in the 63rd minute when substitute Wesley Sonck pounced for Belgium.

Three minutes later Moussa Dembele doubled the lead before Karel Geraerts put the game beyond doubt with 15 minutes remaining.

Neither country can qualify for the finals.

European champions Greece qualified for next year's tournament with a 1-0 away win over Turkey courtesy of a 79th-minute goal from Ioannis Amanatidis.

Amanatidis secured the win after a Georgios Samaras pass cut through the Turkey defence and put him through clear on goal. The striker raced into the penalty area and lobbed a shot over the lunging Turkey keeper Volkan Demirel.

The win lifted Greece to 25 points in Group C, seven clear of Turkey with two games remaining. Norway leapfrogged Turkey into second place with a win in Bosnia and host Turkey next month.

"We had lots of chances and should have scored more goals but in the end it worked out well for us," Amanatidis said after the match.

Turkey's defeat piled fresh pressure on the side who have failed to keep up their challenge for top spot after winning their first four matches, including a 4-1 defeat of Greece in the away fixture in March.

"It's a great victory after the unfortunate result in March. The team showed great character and soul and we earned a great qualification," said Greek keeper Costas Chalkias.

Turkey must beat Norway and Bosnia to secure the second berth into the finals.

Samaras played an important role in stirring the Greek side after replacing Angelos Charisteas with half an hour remaining, creating his own chances as well as setting up Amanatidis.

Turkey went close to equalising with five minutes remaining when Arda Turan fired in a shot which beat Greece keeper Konstantinos Chalkias but his effort rebounded off the post.

The home side had been lacklustre for most of the match, with their determination to get their campaign back on track failing to translate into productive attacking moves.

Norway moved closer to a place at Euro 2008 after a goal in each half gave them a 2-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Defender Erik Hagen gave Norway a perfect start in front of only 1,500 fans in Sarajevo when he headed home a fifth-minute cross by John Arne Riise.

Bjorn Helge Riise sealed Norway's win with a crisp low shot from 18 metres in the 74th minute.

The result lifted the Norwegians into second place on 20 points from 10 matches, two points ahead of Turkey who slipped to third after a 1-0 defeat by Greece, who have now qualified.

Norway can join them in next year's tournament in Austria and Switzerland with a home win over the Turks in Oslo next month.

The Bosnians missed several good chances in the first half and laid siege to the visitors' goal in the second before they were caught on the break and punished for their poor finishing -- Zvjezdan Misimovic and Zlatan Muslimovic having failed to take their opportunities.

Moldova claimed a welcome away win, defeating Malta 3-2 at Ta' Qali. An Igor Bungaev penalty was followed up by two Viorel Frunza efforts. Terrence Scerri and Michael Mifsud replied late on for the hosts. Moldova move level on points with fifth-placed Hungary.

Romania took a vital step towards the Euro 2008 finals on Wednesday with a 2-0 away victory over Luxembourg.

Goals from Florentin Petre and Ciprian Marica left the group leaders waiting on the outcome of Albania's game underway against Bulgaria to know if they had qualified on the night.

Midfielder Petre, called up at the last minute after three key players were suspended, scored the first from close range four minutes before the break.

Striker Marica added the second on the hour mark after receiving a perfect ball from Cristian Chivu.

Romania dominated the game but struggled to create scoring opportunities in the first half in the absence of suspended main striker Adrian Mutu.

A lacklustre Netherlands beat Slovenia 2-0 to get their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign firmly back on track.

The Dutch, who lost 1-0 to Romania on Saturday, opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Wesley Sneijder pounced on a defensive blunder by Branko Ilic and rounded goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar sealed victory in the 87th minute after breaking through the Slovenian defence with Ryan Babel.

With two matches remaining, the Dutch are second in the group with 23 points from 10 games, three points behind leaders Romania following their earlier 2-0 win in Luxembourg.

Dutch coach Marco van Basten made five changes after the defeat in Romania, notably due to the absence of three suspended players.

The result was a first half in which only Robin van Persie and Sneijder brought creativity and pace to the Dutch game, with the pair being involved in all their team's best chances.

Sneijder came close to a second goal after 22 minutes and then again nine minutes before the interval when Van Persie's brilliant pass set him up -- only for the midfielder to miss the target when unmarked before the goalkeeper.
