The GC group of around 11 riders has just gone over the top of the Ornon with a 3’45” deficit. It’s hard to know whether the breakaway will hold on or not. They are a strong uphill fighting force, but the attacks have not yet come from behind.

Evenepoel still has two Red Bull team-mates, plus a man up the road, so he’s in a good position. Decathlon has Aurelien Paret-Peintre with him and two up the road, so Paul Seixas has bodies with him, too.

Pogacar is down to just Grossschartner and Del Toro, while Ayuso and Skjelmose are about to have Pedersen and Vacek as well as Gee-West after they sit up on the descent.

Yesterday’s stage winner leads the break over the top of the Col d’Ornon to pocket another five KOM points. That puts him just five points behind Valentin Paret-Peintre, who has been caught and passed by the yellow jersey group after his earlier starring role in the break.

The virtual KOM standings are:

There are 20pts up for grabs on the final climb to Alpe d’Huez.

There’s been a big shake out on the front with what was a 42-man group having been whittled down to around 15 riders thanks to some sustained pacing from Armirail and Foss. And here’s Carapaz, preparing himself for the summit and the KOM points.

Derek Gee-West, who was in the break, is now back pulling the peloton in a bid to reduce the gap for his team-mates Juan Ayuso and Mathias Skjelmose, whose positions in the top 10 are under threat from Lenny Martinez.

Bruno Armirail sets the tempo in the break with Tobias Foss on his wheel. They have dropped the likes of Yates, Bennett and Tiberi, and are holding the gap above four minutes.

The break has started the Cat.2 Col d’Ornon, which is 5.4km at 6.4%. Many riders have been dropped from this group, including Ben O’Connor, Alex Baudin and Mads Pedersen. It’s down to around 25 riders but they still have 4’20” on the pack.
