Atletico Madrid beat rivals Real Madrid 4-2 to secure passage to the Copa del Rey quarter-final.
Two goals in extra-time courtesy of Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme sent Atleti into the last eight as Real's 21-match unbeaten streak came to an end.
Los Blancos had the first real opportunity after 12 minutes when Jude Bellingham found his way into the penalty area, slipped the ball through Axel Witsel’s legs before unleashing a thunderous strike which smashed the crossbar.
Just eight minutes later Real were denied again, this time by some wonderful goalkeeping from Jan Oblak. The Slovenian got down quickly to his right to keep out a deflection which cannoned his way before rushing over to his near post to deny Rodrygo on the follow up.
Atletico Madrid struck first six minutes from the interval, Antonio Rudiger rose highest to head away Rodrigo De Paul’s cross but could only divert it into the path of Samuel Lino at the back post who reacted quickest to fire past Andriy Lunin.
Real Madrid didn’t have to wait long for an equaliser, striking back just five minutes later. Oblak made a mess when coming for Luka Modric’s free-kick and the ball ended up over his head and into the back of the net.
Atletico Madrid took the lead just before the hour-mark thanks to a defensive mix up, the second of the game. This time it was a mix up between goalkeeper Lunin and Rudiger and Alvaro Morata was on hand to profit, stroking the ball into an empty net.
Real Madrid came within inches of equalising 15 minutes from time when Rodrygo’s fierce effort deflected off an Atletico Madrid body and onto the crossbar.
Los Blancos found an equaliser with just eight minutes of normal time left on the clock, Bellingham provided a magnificent cross to the back post and substitute Joselu who had been on the pitch a matter of minutes was on hand to head home, a goal that was enough to send the match into extra-time.
Griezmann fired Atletico 3-2 up with 100 minutes on the clock thanks to a brilliant solo goal. Atletico Madrid’s all-time goalscorer burst down the right-hand side before getting away from Vinicius Junior near the byline before firing a rocket of an effort past Lunin and into the top corner from a very difficult angle.
Riquelme made sure of the victory with just a minute left on the clock, stroking home confidently past Lunin after being slipped in by Memphis Depay. Diego Simeone, not one to hide his emotions, was completely overcome and sprinted onto the pitch to celebrate with his players.
It is just Real Madrid's second defeat of the season across all competitions, both at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

Talking Point - Atletico have their revenge

Just eight days ago, Atletico Madrid squared off against Real Madrid in a cup competition and just like tonight, the match ended all square after 90 minutes. In the Supercopa de Espana however, it was Real Madrid who scored twice in extra time, winning the match 5-3 and advancing to the final.
Tonight was a chance for Diego Simeone’s side to have revenge and they did exactly that. After 90 minutes there was a sense of deja-vu and for the Atletico players, maybe even a sense of ‘not this again’, but in Madrid, thanks to Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme, it was Atletico’s night.
Real Madrid came into this match on an incredible 21-match unbeaten run across all competitions, with their last defeat before tonight coming in September. The last side to beat them before tonight? You better believe it, Atletico Madrid.
Atleti might be 10 points off their city rivals in La Liga, but tonight was their second victory against their rivals in three attempts and it is the Colchoneros that march on to the quarter-final.

Player of the Match - Antoine Griezmann (Atletico)

Before the match, Griezmann was surrounded by his family as the club awarded him a commemorative shirt after he recently became Atletico’s all-time goalscorer. The Atletico crowd chanted the name of their hero, showing appreciation for what he has done for their club.
How fitting then that 100 or so minutes later it was Griezmann who fired Atletico ahead in extra-time against city rivals Real Madrid and on their way to the Copa del Rey quarter-final.
Griezmann, as he so often is, was involved throughout, looking to play between he lines and find pockets of space, his passing was tidy and he kept Atletico ticking but his goal alone is worthy of winning the award, a moment of sheer magic from a magical player.
