Darwin Nunez to serve out Uruguay ban after CAS rejects appeal following 2024 Copa America brawl against Colombia

Darwin Nunez will serve out the remaining three games of his five-match ban for Uruguay after an appeal from the Uruguay Football Association was denied by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Nunez and other Uruguay players were embroiled in an altercation with Colombia fans, climbing into the stands after a 1-0 loss to their South America rivals in the 2024 Copa America semi-finals.

Darwin Nunez will serve out the remainder of his ban for Uruguay after his appeal was denied by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
The Liverpool striker was handed a five-match suspension by CONMEBOL for a physical altercation with Colombia fans following Uruguay's 1-0 loss in the 2024 Copa America semi-finals.
Uruguay players climbed into the stands at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, USA, and confronted Colombia supporters in a section where family members of the Uruguay squad were seated.
Nunez was one of several players who climbed the railings and engaged with fans, resulting in a $20,000 fine. He served two matches of his ban before CAS temporarily lifted the suspension in October 2024 following an appeal from the Uruguay Football Association (AUF).
Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was fined $16,000 and received a four-game suspension, which he has served, whilst Mathias Olivera, Ronald Araujo and captain Jose Maria Gimenez were given three-match suspensions, which they have all served, and fines of $12,000.
The AUF was fined $20,000 and six players, including Emiliano Martinez and Facundo Pellistri, were each given $5,000 fines.

The Uruguayan FA saw their appeal dismissed by CAS, who noted in a statement: "The panel found that in this case the principle of self-defence does not apply.
"The conduct of the players constituted a voluntary, violent and unjustified action which was in violation of the Conmebol disciplinary code."
Having only served two matches of his ban, Nunez will be unavailable for FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Venezuela in June, as well as against Peru in September.
