Pep Guardiola has spoken openly in recent weeks about the need for more consistency from Manchester City.
There was notable frustration at the manner in which two points were squandered during the 2-2 draw with Monaco in their last Champions League outing, with victory denied by a contentious late penalty converted by Eric Dier.
City’s 2‑0 league win over Everton at the weekend showcased some of their attacking firepower, yet even that performance came with the caveat of there being an over reliance on the same key individual.
Erling Haaland has scored 14 goals for City across the Premier League and Champions League this season, failing to score only once - against Tottenham in August.

Villarreal have already tasted defeat against one Premier League side in this season's competition, having lost 1-0 at Tottenham on Matchday 1.
Marcelino's men are winless in three games, but they will take heart from the fact that it is a little over a year since Man City's last away success in Europe - a 4-0 dismantling of Slovan Bratislava on October 1, 2024.
