Was this the best piece of goalkeeping in UEFA Champions League history? Where does it rank v Neuer, Schmeichel heroics?

There have been some miraculous goalkeeping moments in the history of the UEFA Champions League - but Wednesday night threw up a candidate to top the lot. Lille's 23-year-old stopper Lucas Chevalier was the architect, somehow repelling everything Borussia Dortmund could throw at him in the 20th minute of the round-of-16 second-leg tie at Decathlon Arena Stade Pierre-Mauroy. The UEFA Champions League threw up another night for the ages on Wednesday, and amid the chaos, you might have missed arguably the best bit of goalkeeping in the tournament's history.
Lille's Lucas Chevalier was the man responsible, in a series of scarcely believable saves that saw opponents Borussia Dortmund simply unable to find the back of his net.
Let's break down his heroics...
Save 1: Perhaps the best of the lot. From an outswinging corner, after the French keeper had smartly turned behind Julian Ryerson's effort, Julian Brandt's header looked destined for the top corner, before Chevalier leapt to his right to paw it away.
Save 2: Barely seconds later, Chevalier was onto his feet to deny Serhou Guirassy from point-blank range.
Save 3: The ball then went loose and Chevalier, together with Ayyoub Bouaddi, scrambled it clear but only as far as...
Save 4: ...Brandt again, who this time got his effort past Chevalier, only for Thomas Meunier to scramble back and clear off the line, as Chevalier jumped on the loose ball to end a remarkable sequence of play.
If Chevalier's first-half work was special, conversely, at the other end it was a horror show for Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel, who turned in one of the worst howlers seen in this season's competition.
In the fifth minute, Lille's Jonathan David had got in front of his man to side foot a shot straight at Kobel, but the Swiss gloveman somehow just let it roll straight through his legs.
At that point it looked like an upset was on the cards, but back came Dortmund, as goals from Emre Can - from the penalty spot, as Chevalier was finally beaten - and Maximilian Beier sealed their place in the quarter-finals, and a meeting with Barcelona.

Where do Chevalier's heroics rank?
In the pantheon of the Champions League sit some sensational saves.
Front of mind is Peter Schmeichel's flying effort against Rapid Vienna in 1996, an effort often likened to Gordon Banks' wonder save from Pele at the 1970 World Cup.
And if we're talking multi-saves like Chevalier's, what about Jerzy Dudek somehow keeping out Andrey Shevchenko with his double save in the 2005 UCL final?
Or Manuel Neuer's various scintillating interventions, topped by his triple-save against Real Madrid last season?

Chevalier has previous...
In December 2023, Lille faced Metz in Ligue 1, with Chevalier's side looking to maintain their challenge at the top of the table.
In the 29th minute, the visitors were awarded a penalty with the score 0-0 after the now-Manchester United defender Leny Yoro fouled Cheikh Sabaly.
Simon Elisor struck it firmly but Chevalier dived to his left to pull off a fine stop.
And he was at it again in the second half, saving another penalty as Lamine Camara saw his effort beaten away, to the delight of the Lille players and fans.

With his recent heroics in mind, perhaps it's no surprise the Lille academy graduate has been linked with a summer move to Paris Saint-Germain.
