Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 Borussia Dortmund: Kylian Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi both score in Champions League opener

Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi proved the difference as Paris Saint-Germain sealed a comfortable win against Borussia Dortmund in their first UEFA Champions League Group F game of the 2023-24 season. Mbappe scored from the penalty spot in the 49th minute before a fine Hakimi strike extended the hosts' advantage in the 58th minute.

A penalty from Kylian Mbappe and a brilliant goal from Achraf Hakimi gave Paris Saint-Germain an ultimately comfortable win over a game but under-powered Dortmund in Group F of the UEFA Champions League.
Paris dominated possession in the first half with Vitinha excellent – he hit the post with a clever shot – but otherwise they created little, while Dortmund, who came close through Donyel Malen, looked a threat on the counter.
The game changed, though, in the first minute of the second half, Mbappe skewing a shot that hit the arm of the unsighted Niklas Sule.
Somehow, the referee appraised a penalty which was dispatched by Mbappe with ease.
In the 58th minute, Paris made the game safe. A terrific attack starting down the left before being finished from the right, Vitinha teeing-up Hakimi to curve home a lovely finish.

Talking point

Paris were far from vintage tonight, but there were reasons for Luis Enrique to feel hopeful. His team, built by several managers, are now trying to take in his demands while also assimilating two new forwards. Once there is familiarity with both, this should be a very good side. But more than that, this should be a very good side because, in Vitinha and Warren Zaire-Emery, they have two young, brilliant and all-round midfielders who will only get better – individually and as a partnership. It seems unlikely that Paris can get good enough to win this season’s competition – both their centre-backs are past their best, and both their full-backs are defensively suspect. But if they gel into a cohesive unit, on a good night they will be a serious threat to anyone.

Match highlights

14’ - NOW THEN! Schlotterback into Malen, who turns his man gorgeously, grooves into the box, opens his body ... and after opening space for the shot, punches an effort directly at Donnarumma. 15’ - VITINHA SWEEPS OUT TO DEMBELE DOWN THE LEFT And he doesn't muck about, guiding a low cross into the middle ... that Kolo Muani can't quite meet. This is warming up. 20’ - VITINHA'S THE BEST PLAYER ON THE PITCH SO FAR And he takes a little pass into the box from Hakimi, sweeping a low instashot towards the far post ... that hits the far post and bounces out! Paris are getting closer...46’ - PENALTY PARIS! Dembele injects some pace, plays a one-two with Hakimi and snaps back a cross for Mbappe, who totally slices his attempted sidefooter ... into Sule's arm! I've no idea how that can possibly be called "deliberate" because Sule could do nothing to get out of the way - it was the arm on the other side of player and ball - but here we are.
49’ - GOAL! PSG 1-0 Borussia Dortmund (Mbappe pen) He doesn't catch it perfectly but the angle is good enough, Mbappe swiping the penalty into the bottom-left side-netting. 58’ - WHAT A GOAL! PSG 2-0 Borussia Dortmund (Hakimi) Where to start with this?! Hernandez keeps the width and takes a clipped pass from Marquinhos, finding Mbappe, accepting a return and returning the return. Mbappe's cross is cleared, but only as far as Vitinha, who intimates a shot, dashes from centre to right and finds Hakimi, inside him and inside the box. Hakimi flicks a return, Vitinha soft-shoes a square pass, and Hakimi guides into the far corner with the outside of his right foot! Brilliant, brilliant behaviour. That is the kind of team Paris can become.

Key stat

Kylian Mbappe has now scored 35 Champions League goals for PSG, the same as Thierry Henry got for Arsenal. Karim Benzema (Real Madrid, 78) is the only Frenchman who has scored more for any one side.
