VAR was supposed to put an end to contentious decisions, wasn't it?

Well, good luck with that.
VAR took centre stage for four long minutes during Real Madrid's humiliating defeat to Ajax at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night.
The Dutch visitors looked like they'd scored a terrific third goal to take complete control of the tie, only for referee Felix Brych to put his finger to his ear and start an agonising VAR process.
The debate seemed to be over whether the ball had gone out of play or not far earlier in the move, something that was far from conclusive on the replays.
And there was also plenty of debate about whether VAR should really be used for an incident so long before the actual act of scoring took place.
For four agonizing minutes the referee and his assistants in their TV room looked for a reason to disallow the goal (at least according to the conspiracy theorists), but no reason could be found and the goal stood... much to the delight of Ajax fans and the vast majority of neutrals.
