The 36-year-old, who also played for Lazio and Sampdoria, has scored 188 goals during 14 seasons in Italy's top flight and played for the Azzurri at the 1994 World Cup in the U.S..
He was the league's top scorer three times during his time at Lazio -- in 1993 (26 goals), 1994 (23) and also 1996 (24), when he was the joint top marksman with Bari's Igor Protti. He scored seven goals in 28 appearances for Italy.
Although his contract at Bologna expires next month, Signori cited injury problems as the main reason for his decision.
"My contract has nothing to do with it. I keep having problems with my ankles and I think it's best if I call it a day before someone else does it for me.
"If there's any chance of going abroad I'll look at it. For the moment there's nothing concrete in sight but whatever happens Bologna will be my last Italian team.
"If I do carry on playing for another year I will do it in a championship which is less stressful and less demanding from a physical point of view."
