Mpenza joins Hamburg

Hamburg SV have signed former Belgium striker Emile Mpenza from Standard Liege for two million euros, the Bundesliga club said on Tuesday. Mpenza, 25, signed a four-year contract with Hamburg and will be paid about 2.5 million euros a year. Before joining Liege, he played 79 league matches for Bundesliga side Schalke 04, scoring 28 goals.

"Mpenza is an absolutely top-class striker. He will really take us forward," said Hamburg coach Klaus Toppmoeller.

Mpenza recently asked Belgium coach Aime Anthuenis for an indefinite break from the national team. He has scored 14 goals in 37 internationals.
