Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with manager Edin Terzic with immediate effect, the club has announced.
The 41-year-old has worked at the club in several roles but was appointed permanent manager in 2022.
The club revealed that Terzic asked to have his contract terminated, and the request was accepted.
The news comes less than two weeks after Terzic's Dortmund were beaten 2-0 in the UEFA Champions League final by Real Madrid.
Terzic was assistant coach to Lucien Favre at Dortmund from 2018 until he replaced the sacked Swiss manager on an interim basis for the second half of the 2022/21 season.
This proved successful, as Terzic led Dortmund to success in the DFB-Pokal before departing the club.
He returned in 2022 and looked set to win the club the Bundesliga for the first time since 2012 until they were pipped to the title on the final day by Bayern Munich.
A disappointing league campaign followed, with BVB stuttering to a fifth-placed finish, but this was mitigated by a memorable Champions League run, which ultimately culminated with a loss to Madrid.
Terzic addressed the Dortmund fans on the official site, writing: “It is incredibly painful for me to say this to all Black & Yellow fans, but today I am parting company with Borussia Dortmund.
"It was a huge honour to win the DFB Cup with BVB and to lead this fantastic club to the Champions League final. After the game at Wembley, I asked for a meeting with the club’s senior management team, because after nine years at BVB – including six on the coaching staff and two and a half as head coach – I feel that the club’s new era should begin with a new man on the touchline.
"Everyone close to me knows that this has been a very difficult decision for me to take over the last few weeks, but after intensive discussions my fundamental feeling has not changed. I wish Borussia Dortmund the very best, thank you and see you soon.”
