Nine-man Borussia Dortmund suffered a derby day horror show to lose 4-2 at home to Schalke and blow their chance of going back on top of the Bundesliga.
The game began in typical scrappy Revierderby fashion before Jadon Sancho produced the first moment of quality with a beautiful lofted cross for Mario Gotze to head in the opener. Sancho was hit in the face by a lighter hurled from the crowd as he celebrated with his team-mates but was okay to continue.
Their lead last just a few minutes though with Julian Weigl being penalised for handball and after a VAR review, Daniel Caligiuri netted the spot-kick for his sixth of the season.

Despite enjoying 81 per cent possession at times, Lucien Favre’s side were rattled by the equaliser and fell behind from Salif Sane’s bullet header from Caligiuri’s corner.
Thomas Delaney, who missed two sitters in the first half, was eventually taken off for Paco Alacer as the hosts went in search of goals. But the turning point came when skipper Marco Reus was shown a straight red for a tackle from behind.
And the visitors made them pay from the resulting free-kick which was beautifully curled over the wall and into the corner by Caligiuri from around 25 yards.

BVB had lost their heads at this point and Marius Wolf was given his marching orders for a tackle from behind.
Axel Witsel reduced the deficit to give the hosts some hope but that was dispelled two minutes later by Breel Embolo’s fine curling effort from the edge of the box.
And the Royal Blues held on to give Dortmund the derby blues and move nine points clear of Stuttgart who occupy the relegation play off place, while Favre’s side remain a point behind Bayern Munich who play Nuremberg on Sunday.

TALKING POINT

Have Dortmund blown their titles hopes?
Lucien Favre’s side have three games remaining and could be four points behind Bayern by the end of the weekend having led the Bundesliga for most of the season.
After a confident start against Schalke, their defensive frailties were exposed again and then they lost their discipline, meaning skipper Reus and Wolf will be suspended.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Daniel Caligiuri(Schalke): The club’s top scorer scored a cool penalty, set up Sane’s header and then had a contender for goal of the season with a stunning free-kick from distance.
