Cologne striker Lukas Podolski put a long-range effort wide before seeing a goal ruled out for a foul in the build-up.
After a goalless first half, the hosts went close seven minutes into the second period when Portuguese midfielder Petit sent a shot just wide from the edge of the box.
Four minutes later the visitors drew first blood when Reus drilled a low shot into the bottom left from just outside the penalty area.
Gladbach battled to hold on to their lead but, on 79 minutes, ex-Atletico and Internazionale midfielder Maniche smashed a powerful shot into the top right after good work from on-loan Manchester United midfielder Zoran Tosic.
