Dortmund withdrew their offer of a contract extension on Monday, although there was also reported interest from Italy, through Internazionale and Juventus.
"We're in the middle of negotiations with the interested clubs, but as yet nothing is signed," said Metzelder's agent.
Metzelder already has two World Cup tournaments behind him but his career has been interrupted by injuries in recent seasons. He earned rave reviews for his performances alongside Per Mertesacker in the 2006 World Cup as the hosts reached the semi-finals.
