Sammer says: No, thanks

Matthias Sammer has turned down an offer to coach Bayer Leverkusen and instead plans a study tour of Europe. "The offer from Leverkusen was an honour," Sammer told Bild newspaper. "I really considered it but it came too soon after the Stuttgart situation.

Sammer lost his job as Stuttgart coach at the end of last season after the club drifted out of the Champions League places to finish fifth.

The former European Player of the Year was the favourite to take over at Leverkusen following the dismissal of Klaus Augenthaler on September 16 but he wants to hone his coaching skills before taking on another job.

"I want to study methods in England and Spain, as well as with Christoph Daum in Turkey and Louis van Gaal with Alkmaar (in the Netherlands)."

Rudi Voeller, Leverkusen's director of football, will continue to coach the side on a caretaker basis until a long-term replacement is found.

The club have won two and lost one of their three league games since Voeller, the former Germany coach, took temporary charge.
