After missing the World Cup through injury, Chelsea's Fran Kirby made her first start since February and was part of the move that saw Sam Kerr score her first league goal of the season. The three points were enough to take Chelsea to the top of the Women's Super League table, at least until the remaining fixtures for the weekend take place on Sunday.

Sam Kerr grabbed her first goal of the season as champions Chelsea beat West Ham 2-0 in the Women’s Super League on Saturday evening.
The Australian forward scored the first goal of the game in the 36th minute having already had one effort chalked off for offside.
Kerr headed in at the back post to convert a cross from Niamh Charles, with the returning Fran Kirby playing a part in the build-up.
Kirby was making her first start since a serious knee injury suffered in February.
Lauren James almost made it two when Kirby teed her up with a smart assist, but Mackenzie Arnold blocked with her legs in the West Ham goal.
In the second half, West Ham kept the home side at bay, and Emma Harries, Viviane Asseyi, Riko Ueki and Kirsty Smith all had chances, with Zecira Musovic saving well from Smith’s shot.
The three points were then made certain for Chelsea in the first minute of added time, when Erin Cuthbert beat Arnold with a low shot.
The victory is Chelsea’s 17th consecutive home win in the WSL, with the last time they failed to secure three points at home being a draw against Arsenal in February 2022.
Chelsea are now top having played three matches, with two wins and a draw so far, and West Ham are eighth, with one win and two losses.
Five fixtures will be played on Sunday, including the Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton at Anfield.
