Emma Hayes has revealed that she put Mauricio Pochettino on hold to speak to Sir Alex Ferguson about her upcoming role as the Women's head coach. It was announced earlier this week that the Chelsea Women's boss would be leaving the club at the end of the season to head stateside in what she described as "a dream come true." Hayes has won 13 major trophies since joining the club in 2012.

Emma Hayes has admitted she put Mauricio Pochettino on hold to speak to Sir Alex Ferguson after it was announced she had accepted the US Women’s head coach job.
Hayes, who will finish the season with the Blues before heading stateside to take on a new challenge, said Ferguson called to pass on some words of wisdom when she was in the middle of chatting to the men’s Chelsea boss.
“We had a chat last week, he rang me, but I was in the middle of talking to Poch (Pochettino) so I was torn,” she said.
“Unfortunately I had to tell Poch to wait. There's not many people you tell Poch to wait for but I did say to him it was Sir Alex.
“He calls me from time to time so I wasn't surprised. Anything he says to me I always take with such pride. He is a legend of the game and someone whose opinion I value and he has a love of America.
“We talked a little bit about that, a little bit about legacy, a little bit about leaving at the top. So there were wise words from him. I'm sure it won't be the last phone call I get from him this season.”
Hayes joined Chelsea in 2012 and has gone on to win six Women’s Super League titles, five FA Cups and two League Cups, although has been unable to land the UEFA Champions League.
She is set to become the highest-paid coach in women’s football when she takes charge of the USA women’s squad and described the move as a “dream come true."
“This is a huge honour to be given the opportunity to coach the most incredible team in world football history,” Hayes said.
“The feelings and connection I have for this team and for this country run deep.
“I've dreamed about coaching the USA for a long time so to get this opportunity is a dream come true.
“I know there is work to do to achieve our goals of winning consistently at the highest levels. To get there, it will require dedication, devotion and collaboration from the players, staff and everyone at the US Soccer Federation.”
