WOLVES INTO THIRD ROUND OF FA CUP WITH 15TH STRAIGHT WIN
Wolverhampton Wanderers made it a night to remember as they moved into the third round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup after beating Stoke City 2-0 in their first televised match.
Beth Merrick scored a stunning goal on the counter in the second half, and then Racheal Quigley capitalised on a poor clearance by the Stoke goalkeeper to seal the deal.
It was a fruitless first half as both teams struggled to finish. Wolves came out with the first chance as Anna Morphet played a cross to Charlotte Greengrass, who despite keeping a hold of it among three defenders, sent her shot wide.
Stoke had a couple of opportunities of their own, including a set-piece from Shannon Stamps that went just wide. Olivia Cook broke free at the edge of the pack, but her effort skewed past the post for their biggest chance yet.
Stamps then got on the ball herself after a good run from Delphi Cole, but it lacked power and sailed harmlessly into the goalkeeper.
After half-time, Wolves looked the better again. As Amy Sims got a great header forward off a goal kick, it went through to Chloe Williams who flicked it above the goalkeeper and the goal.
Their first goal would finally come after a Stoke corner. With the Potters tied up in their half, Georgia Marshall anticipated where the ball would come down and was able to set Merrick up, who ran and then fired home into the roof of the net.
Stoke manager Sarah Richardson subbed on scorers Layla Kennerley and Emilia Wilson, but they were unable to stop an energized Wolves as goalkeeper Harriet Grimshaw batted a free kick straight at Quigley, who took it off her chest and made it 2-0.
This marks a 15th win on the bounce for Dan McNamara's side, and they will now wait to see who they draw next on Monday.
