Leicester City progressed to the Women’s FA Cup quarter-finals after they won 6-2 against Birmingham City, while Tottenham defeated Charlton 1-0 in a London derby.
The opening goal for Leicester came just 70 seconds in, when Missy Goodwin could only turn Ellie Mason’s header back across the six-yard box past her own goalkeeper to put the Championship side Birmingham ahead, but the Foxes levelled as Janice Cayman slotted home when clean through on goal, running onto a through ball from Saori Takarada.
Four minutes later, the hosts were ahead, with Shannon O’Brien crashing one in from the edge of the area, but Birmingham dug deep to equalise on 40 minutes, when Christie Harrison-Murray fed Libby Smith who delicately dinked the onrushing Janina Lietzig in the Leicester net.
Just a minute later, however, Leicester had snuck their noses back ahead, as Sam Tierney set up O’Brien for her second of the afternoon to send Willie Kirk’s side in front at the interval.
Takarada nodded home a Jutta Rantala free-kick to restore the home side’s two-goal cushion after the break, before Deanne Rose made it five with one of her first touches since coming off the bench, curling home into the far corner.
Aileen Whelan put the result beyond all doubt eight minutes from time, lashing home to send the Foxes safely into the hat for the next round.
Later on Saturday, Tottenham beat Charlton 1-0 courtesy of Kit Graham's 76th-minute winner.
Graham came off the bench against her former club to decide the course of the game when she struck from 25 yards out with a fierce strike.
The win is a welcome boost for Tottenham after their midweek defeat to Manchester City knocked them out of the League Cup quarter-finals.
On Sunday a host of games take place including a blockbuster between Arsenal and Manchester City.
