George Eastham, part of England's iconic 1966 World Cup squad, dies aged 88

As a member of England's 1966 World Cup-winning squad, George Eastham will go down as a legend of the game. The forward represented Newcastle, Arsenal and Stoke City during his illustrious career and scored the winning goal for The Potters in the 1972 League Cup final at Wembley. He has died at the age of 88, with Stoke leading the tributes to Eastham, who won 19 international caps.

George Eastham, a member of England's 1966 World Cup-winning squad, has died aged 88.
The forward was part of the squad that lifted the trophy for the only time in the Three Lions' history, although he did not feature during the tournament. Eastham earned 19 caps during his career, scoring two goals for England.
At club level, he played for Newcastle United, Arsenal, and Stoke City, as well as spells with Ards, Cleveland Stokers, Cape Town City, Hellenic, and East London United.
He managed Stoke between 1977 and 1978, and his former club have released a tribute to the World Cup winner.
"The Stoke City Football Club family is immensely saddened by the passing of club legend George Eastham OBE at the age of 88," a statement read.
"A stalwart of 124 and 207 league appearances for Newcastle United and Arsenal respectively, prior to his time in the Potteries, Eastham represented his country on 19 occasions.Â
"The Potters will wear black armbands for the fixture against Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow as a mark of respect.
"Details of how the Club will pay tribute at the bet365 Stadium on Boxing Day will be revealed in due course.
"Our thoughts are with George’s family and friends at this difficult time."
Eastham joined The Potters for ÂŁ35,000 in 1966 and went on to make 194 appearances for the club.
He scored the winning goal in a 2-1 win against Chelsea during the 1972 League Cup final at Wembley.
A statement from the FA read: "We're saddened to hear of the passing of George Eastham OBE at the age of 88. George won 19 caps in his Three Lions career and was a member of our 1966 World Cup-winning squad.
"Our condolences go to George's family and friends."
